Coaches

Updated April 10, 2026

Coaches are integral to our mission of developing and supporting young swimmers in our community. It is their job to guide them to excellence in the pool, and instill in them the tools they need to succeed beyond the competition. Our Coaching Staff is responsible for developing and leading the swimming aspects of the swim team, such as planning practices and meets, teaching swimming techniques, providing swimmer feedback, and encouraging all swimmers.

Training Philosophy

The West Sacramento Dolphins (WSST) is a not-for-profit swim organization located in West Sacramento, California. Our team has been an active part of our community and developing swimmers since 1991.

As coaches, we take a long-term athlete development (LTAD) view of swimming, seeing the swimmer's career as an endurance event, not a sprint. We also find that swimmers who learn better stroke techniques early, will inherently swim faster and smarter races.

WSST Coaches stress the ownership of the athlete in the process of their improvement and achievement. Concepts of intrinsic feedback are introduced, along with goal setting, accountability and a vision for the future of their swimming.

WSST has a variety of programs to help all levels of swimmers meet their goals. From swim clinics to our recreational swimming team, our instructors and coaches aim to teach athletes how to swim and then help them excel to the highest levels. Through the sport of swimming, we strive to develop the character, skills, and desire necessary for each swimmer to maximize his or her potential.

Alfonso Head Coach

This swim team has always felt like a second family, and our pool has truly been my second home. I began swimming with the West Sacramento Dolphins at five years old and stepped into a junior coaching role at sixteen. I started as an assistant coach in the summer of 2021, and over time, I’ve grown into the role of head coach. What matters most to me is helping each swimmer improve, gain confidence, and build lifelong skills, just like my coaches helped me do. I know you all are ready for another great season. Let’s make it a great one. Don’t Mess!

I am a proud West Sacramento native and mother of four who grew up playing youth soccer and swimming throughout my childhood and high school years at River City. I’ve had the privilege of coaching various youth sports, and I can say without hesitation that being part of the West Sac Dolphins has been one of the most meaningful, fulfilling, and enjoyable experiences of all.

I love this community and our team. As a coach, I strive to inspire, encourage, and create an environment where every swimmer feels supported, and most importantly, has FUN.

Go Dolphins!
& let’s go Julian, Jiovanni, and Jimena!

Hello! I’m Coach Daniel, and this will be my 5th year coaching as of this coming season. I tried out many different sports when I was younger, but swimming is the one I stuck with because of how much I enjoyed it. I spent about 12 years on the West Sacramento Dolphins team as a swimmer, and I’m so glad to have the opportunity to be coaching it as I have the last few years. I am also an assistant manager for aquatics at the West Sac Rec Center. I have learned many things over the previous seasons, and I’m excited for this trek into a new summer with all returning and new swimmers. Let’s put in the work, have a lot of fun, and enjoy our summer together! GO DOLPHINS!

Hello, my name is Esteban and I have been on the team since I was 5 years old. I grew up and live in West Sacramento. I started Junior Coaching in 2021 and as of 2025, I became an assistant coach once I aged out of swimming. I also work with the City of West Sacramento as a Lifeguard. I am currently in college pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. I look forward to giving back and helping the next generation of swimmers in our community!

I’m so excited to be back with the Dolphins as an Assistant Coach. I started swimming with the Dolphins when I was eight years old and finished my competitive swim career with the Davis Aqua Monsters. At River City High School, I was involved in both swimming and water polo, which helped shape me as an athlete and teammate.

I swam competitively for nearly ten years where I gained technical training to not only improve my technique, but gain valuable information to pass on as a coach. I’m currently a student at Sacramento City College and will be transferring to CSU Long Beach in the fall. I plan to major in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.

I’m looking forward to helping swimmers build their skills, confidence, and most importantly, make sure they have a fun and enjoyable season.
